Serena Williams ruthlessly defeats her?sister, Venus at the US Open

Serena Williams defeated her elder sister, Venus Williams in two straight sets 6-1 6-2 on Friday, making the 30th career showdown at Flushing Meadows in New York a one-sided affair.

The 23 Grand Slam winner was literally on fire against her sister, merciless in her blistering returns and making Venus look more like her apprentice. Venus tried to salvage things, but it was not just her night as Serena played her best match since her return to tennis after giving birth to her daughter Olympia in September.

She played pitch-perfect tennis to outlast her elder sister after 71 minutes on Arthur Ashe Stadium.

In her post match interview, Serena showed her sister a lot of respect saying, “It’s not easy. She’s my best friend. she means the world to me. She’s supportive of my career and I’m supportive of her career. Every time she loses I feel like I do. It’s not very easy but it’s a tournament and we know there’s more to life than playing each other and playing tennis. I love her with all my heart. She’s the reason I’m here. She’s the only reason I’m still out here. After God, I definitely owe everything to her.”

Serena next meets Kaia Kanepi, the 33 year-old Estonian star, who beat Rebecca Peterson 6-3 7-6 in an earlier third round match.

26-year-old Pakistani model commits suicide after battle with severe depression

Anam Tanoli, a fashion model from Pakistan, was found dead at her residence in Lahore on Saturday. Police sources have revealed that the 26-year-old had committed suicide and was found hanging from her ceiling fan at her residence in the Defence area. The body was shifted to the General Hospital for post mortem examination. The model had returned to Pakistan two months back from Italy. Several reports hint that Tanoli was suffering from severe depression although it is not known if she was feeling low because of personal or professional reasons. Further investigations are underway to ascertain the cause of her suicide.

President Buhari has said that as a beneficiary of free and fair elections, he is not afraid of a credible process in 2019. Speaking at an interactive session with members of the Nigerian community in China today, Sunday September 2nd, President Buhari pledged that Nigerians eligible to vote in the next general elections will be allowed to freely elect candidates of their choice. ‘‘I have no fear about free and fair elections because that is what brought me to the present position. I know what I went through and very few Nigerians could boast of trying four times. Workers hack 28-year-old boss to death in Ogun

A 28 year old farmer, Adeleke Adewusi, has been hacked to death allegedly by his workers at his farm in Alapa community in the state on Monday August 26th. According to Punch, the two accused workers were allegedly hired by a resident of the community identified simply as Ola Sheu to kill their boss whom he was having a running battle with. It was learnt that the deceased was applying pesticides on his cocoa farm, said to be about one acre, when one of the workers, Femi, suddenly descended on him with a machete. In an attempt to get help for the deep cut he sustained, Adeleke reportedly ran to the second worker identified as Kehinde who also allegedly brought out a machete and joined in the attack. The suspects then fled the scene after they confirmed him dead. 30 soldiers reportedly 'killed' as Boko Haram Invades military base

At least 30 soldiers have been killed, following an attack by Boko Haram insurgents on their military base. The insurgents, according to AFP, were said to have invaded the military base, located in the North-East, near the border Nigeria shares with Niger. According to sources who spoke to AFP, the soldiers attacked the army establishment at Zari village, near the northern axis of Borno State, late on Thursday. The troops had to temporarily withdraw their attacks, following the heavy fighting that took place. Another military source, who preferred not to be named, was quoted as saying: “they came in large numbers in trucks, carrying heavy weapons and engaged soldiers in a battle that lasted for an hour. We lost at least 30 men. Flood destroys 3.700 card readers at INEC office in Edo State

Over 3,700 card readers have been destroyed by flood at the Edo State headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), prompting the commission to consider relocating the state headquarters. According to The Nation, workers usually had to scamper for safety whenever there is heavy downpour. This has been the situation for three weeks. Abubakar Nahuche, Chairman, INEC Standing Committee on Estate and Works, who spoke after the recent damage was assessed, noted that several electoral materials were destroyed. According to him, Information Communication Technology equipment was also damaged. However, he said the incident would not affect the commission’s preparation for the 2019 elections. He appealed to state government to address the issue of flooding in Ikpoba-Hill area, where the state headquarters is located.
